APU KUNTUR: High quality and closeness to nature with alpaca fibers
APU KUNTUR – an unusual name. But what does it mean? The roots of the company name lie in the Andes, the home of the alpacas. Translated, it means ‘Sacred Condor’ – and there are indeed certain values that the company holds sacred. Ever since its foundation in 1989, the products have stood for the highest quality as well as a sustainable manufacturing. At APU KUNTUR, traditional craftsmanship blends with modern European fashion design. The family-run business in Cusco, Peru, produces exclusive, high-quality clothing and accessories made from high-quality alpaca wool - one of the finest natural fibres in the world. Above all, the alpaca fibre found in baby alpaca wool is unrivalled in terms of softness.

In 2008, Nelly Gutknecht-Amachi, a mother of three, set up her own knitting business in Cusco. Her aim was to provide other mothers and their families with secure employment and a good income. The business now employs around 100 people and is managed by her brother Juvenal and her cousin Juan. Nelly and her daughters create the designs in studios in Switzerland, amongst other places. The family business operates in accordance with Fair Trade guidelines – in addition to fair wages and above-average social benefits, employees are provided with communal meals, for example.
Alpaca fibers as wool in incomparable quality
Anyone who has ever worn a garment made from alpaca wool simply can’t get enough of it. Once you’ve experienced how pleasantly soft yet lightweight it feels, you’ll never want to be without it again. Its high fineness is comparable to that of cashmere. But alpaca fibres have far more to offer than just their cosiness.
Alpaca wool has the ability to regulate temperature in a comfortable way: keeping you warm in winter and cool in Summer . What’s more, alpaca garments prevent unpleasant odours from developing, even when you’re sweating heavily. In fact, the wool actually has antibacterial properties. This is due to its low natural oil content. Wash cycles ,thanks to these benefits, they are almost never needed. Simply airing them out is enough, and you can enjoy their long-lasting quality and genuine sustainability.
Set an environmentally conscious example
Clothes make the man - as the saying goes, our clothes are far more than just clothing.
