Toe socks Tabi

Tabi socks - the perfect companion

Geta (jap. 下駄)

Geta shoes are an integral part of Japanese culture. These are the traditional wooden sandals that are often worn together with traditional clothing such as the kimono or yukata. Geta consist of a wooden sole and two wooden blocks that are attached vertically. A strap is attached to the wooden footbed, which runs upwards between the first and second toe and from there downwards to the right and left.

In earlier times, wooden sandals were used to lift the feet off the dirt and mud of the street and protect them from moisture. Originally, the shoes were worn by farmers and labourers, but gradually found their way into the big cities of Japan. Today, Geta shoes are a fashion accessory and are also very popular with tourists. They epitomise the great craftsmanship of Japan and combine functionality and beauty. Wearing Geta is not easy and requires a certain amount of practice and dexterity, as the raised sole and limited contact area with the ground challenge your balance.

In Japan, toe socks - known as tabi socks - are traditionally worn with the geta. They protect the foot from friction and blisters and prevent sweat from coming into direct contact with the wood of the geta. In Japanese culture, walking barefoot is often seen as unkempt, especially in formal or traditional contexts. Wearing tabi socks shows respect for cultural norms and traditions.
